On January 3, 2022, the Faculty of Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan University will hold an international conference, “Rabbi Dr. David Zvi Hoffmann (1843-1921): Scholar, Exegete, Halakhist, Leader”. Each of the conference sessions will focus on a particular facet of his life work: Hoffmann as an Orthodox Leader and Thinker; Hoffmann as a Scholar and Exegete; Hoffmann as Halakhic Authority; and the final session will explore Rabbi Dr. Hoffmann’s Legacy.

This year’s Israel Vacuum Society Webinar Series commenced on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 16:00 (Israel time) with a lecture, “Reinventing Batteries Through Materials Design”, by Prof. Yi Cui, a distinguished materials science and engineering researcher from Stanford University. The lecture was moderated by the world-renowned scientist, Prof. Doron Aurbach, of Bar-Ilan University’s Department of Chemistry.

Prof. Shlomo Havlin, of the Department of Physics at Bar-Ilan University, has been elected an Institute of Physics 2021 Honorary Fellow for being among the pioneers of the field of Complex Networks and, in particular, the subfield of Interacting Networks based on statistical physics and percolation theory.

Muslim, Jewish Students Ring in Chanukah

As the Jewish holiday of Chanukah began, a group of Israeli Jewish and Muslim students from Bar-Ilan University gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights. While tasting traditional sufganiyot – jelly doughnuts topped with powdered sugar -- the students discussed the story of the Maccabees and the meaning of the holiday. The highlight was the lighting of the nine-branched menorah which is lit every night during the eight-day celebration.

Prof. Eric Lawee, of Bar-Ilan’s Zalman Shamir Bible Department, is the finalist in the prestigious Jordan Schnitzer Book Awards competition of the Association for Jewish Studies for 2021. Prof. Lawee's book Rashi’s Commentary on the Torah: Canonization and Resistance in the Reception of a Jewish Classic (Oxford University Press) is being recognized in the Medieval and Early Modern Jewish History and Culture category. 

How Do We Know We're Tired?

Throughout evolution sleep has remained universal and essential to all organisms with a nervous system, including invertebrates such as flies, worms, and even jellyfish. Why animals sleep despite the continuous threat of predators, and how sleep benefits the brain and single cells remains a mystery. 

Research with the Israel Electric Corporation

The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) and Bar-Ilan University have signed a research collaboration agreement. In this framework, researchers from Bar-Ilan's Center for Energy and Sustainability will study various fields, including networks, artificial intelligence, storage, hydrogen, current stability and high voltage.
