In the spirit of “love your neighbor as yourself,” Bar-Ilan University promotes social involvement and volunteering. The university supports many social projects and encourages faculty members and students to participate in community outreach and to play an influential role in bettering Israeli society.

Most people would agree that jargon is annoying. But as medical students involved in an innovative program discovered, in some situations, it can be dangerous, too.

The perils of reliance on traditional energy sources are today an accepted fact, in Israel and throughout the world. Non-renewable sources of energy are costly to produce; with the world’s energy demands projected to quadruple by 2050, a dependence on finite resources will soon become too expensive to sustain. Equally worrisome are the destructive effects of fossil fuels on our planet, the extent of which has in recent times become unavoidably clear.

In the ever-changing technology landscape, two things are certain: “embedded” and “portable” are where the world is headed. And for consumers to be able to take their devices wherever they go—or for those devices to be implanted into the human body, and stay there indefinitely—the technology will need to get smaller. So small, in fact, that the human eye can’t see it.

Seven hours a day, five days a week, 15 individuals with cognitive impairments study drumming, singing, band work, and music history at Bar-Ilan. Musically talented but excluded from communal music life, these students form an ensemble whose year-end show is a sold-out sensation. More important, their training places them at the locus of a system of concentric circles, each representing a relationship of its own: with students, with staff, with teachers, and even with the audience in the music hall.
