The Linguistics of the Rock Hyrax Language

Searching for the origins of human language, we often look for similarities with animal communication. Beyond the existing parallels in sound-producing mechanisms, there are also statistical principles related to production and communicational efficiency. One of these principles is the "Law of Brevity", which states that there is an inverse relationship between word length and usage that optimizes informational coding against the effort of producing sounds.

Non-Local Locality among those Choosing a Life of Simplicity in Israel

"Think globally - act locally" is one of the most prominent slogans in the world of environmental activism. This study examined how environmentalists in Israel interpret the slogan and how in practice they act. Dr. Einat Zamwel and Prof. Orna Sasson-Levy analyzed the daily political activities of Israelis who choose a lifestyle of voluntary simplicity out of environmental and humanistic concerns. Their research points to the contradictions and complexities that underlie the political activism of those who choose this lifestyle.

Public Intimacy and Collective Solidarity

Scholarship on media events has rarely considered how interpersonal interactions between participants mobilize collective feelings of solidarity. By studying Israel’s popular “Big Brother” television program, Prof. Danny Kaplan and Yoni Kupper demonstrated how some of the structural-interactive features of the reality show encourage viewers to shift from the position of bystanders to the position of confidants and companions of the contestants. “Big Brother” differs from other reality shows in that it has no defined mission other than to beat all other competitors.

How Do Nerve Cells Code and Transfer Information?

The way in which nerve cells code information is a riddle that has occupied neuro-researchers for many years. Doctoral research conducted by Ayala Matzner, supervised by Prof. Izhar Bar-Gad, showed that the nerve cells of the basal ganglions (nerve cells located deep within the brain and connected to regulating voluntary movements) have an active repertoire of calculative qualities, which change due to various types of input and are dependent on the internal state of the nerve cell.
