Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) might function properly in general society – in the event there was educational intervention which guaranteed they interacted with others, mostly children their own age. Research led by Prof. Nirit Baumonger-Zviely of the School of Education, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, focused on the Preschool Peer Social Intervention method (PPSI). This intervention method, unique to Israel, encourages social play, conversation and interaction between children with ASD and children without, of the same age group (3-6).

The research found that interaction, play and conversations between the children improved the communicational and social abilities of ASD children over time. By the end of the process, ASD children were socially engaged with the rest of the children. The teachers also reported an overall improvement in these children. There were no similar results observed in ASD children who did not take part in the intervention program.
