BIU is launching an innovative learning tool: an AI-based learning assistant. A GPT natural language model that has been trained on course content, with whom students can talk regularly. If they missed a class, need additional explanationד, or seek information and clarification on assigned tasks, this assistant will immediately help them.

The assistant operates based on relevant information provided by lecturers, ensuring the content is reliable and meets academic standards. It draws from transcribed lectures, presentations, exams, assignments, and bibliographic sources. Among other capabilities, this wise assistant can provide course content information, discuss academic issues, answer administrative questions, generate and check exams, conduct simulations and role-playing exercises, and more.

"Personalized Teaching in Every Sense of the Word"

The project was born in early 2024 as part of the search for a solution for reserve soldiers and security forces who had to miss classes due to their commitment to national security. It was developed in the Learning and Teaching Division, headed by VP Yuval Schreibman, and led by Prof. Yaniv Fox from the Faculty of Humanities and Dr. Lihie Telem from the Learning and Teaching Division. According to Fox: "Integrating AI into the degree better prepares our students for the evolving job market. Making content accessible through artificial intelligence allows for clear and personalized delivery of complex educational material. This is true for both physics and medieval history." Schreibman adds: "For pedagogues, this is an old dream come true. Personalized teaching in every sense of the word. Teaching that learns about you and assists you precisely in the manner and time required."

In the pilot phase, the assistant will be launched in 15 courses by 15 lecturers from various faculties, including experts in education, physics, business administration, information science, psychology, communication, history, law, life sciences, brain research, Israel studies, political science, management, Arabic, and engineering.

World Leader in AI-Based Research

Bar-Ilan is considered a world leader in AI-based research and aims to be a pioneer in integrating AI into actual teaching. The university offers over 200 courses in artificial intelligence and its applications as part of its study programs, aiming to provide students with essential skills for their future. Bar-Ilan was also among the first universities to formulate an AI teaching policy for students, promoting transparency in the use of artificial intelligence in performing tasks and submitting assignments.

Currently, a forum of lecturers is being established to promote the use of AI in teaching and learning in areas such as syllabus and course development, classroom instruction, AI-based assessment, and more.
