The Institute of Archaeology at Bar Ilan University was founded only recently, and its current director is Prof. Hanan Eshel. The Institute functions as part of the Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies, and serves as the framework for the wide range of archaeological activities carried out under the auspices of Bar Ilan University. There are over ten researchers currently active within the Institute, conducting a wide range of research activities relating to the ancient cultures of the Land of Israel and its environs, both in the field and in laboratories and libraries. A central part of the research activities involves teaching and actively involving students in the ongoing work, and includ several field school excavations.
