The Office of the Vice President for Research at Bar-Ilan University is responsible for the Research Authority, which includes nurturing all areas of research at the university, expanding the research activities of the faculties, as well as developing new research channels and promoting collaboration between researchers and institutions.

Prof. Yaron Shav-Tal was appointed Vice President for Research in 2024. Prior to this, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences.

Prof. Shav-Tal received his Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science and completed his post-doctorate at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Subsequently, in 2005, he joined the Faculty of Life Sciences and the research faculty at the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at Bar-Ilan University.

Prof. Shav-Tal has published over 100 articles and has won numerous awards and research grants, including prestigious research grants from the ERC and NIH.

Prof. Shav-Tal's research group focuses on the activity of genes within living cells and the life cycle of RNA molecules produced from genes in our cells. The uniqueness of the research lies in the ability to track the activity of a single gene in a living cell in real-time, and the RNA molecules produced from active genes through fluorescent labeling of mRNA molecules and tracking them using state of the art sensitive microscopy technologies. Such studies allow for understanding of gene activity in normal conditions and in disease states, and to investigate the processes that go awry in pathological conditions
